John Fetterman Threatens to Leave Democratic Party Over Israel Policy

Senator John Fetterman announced at the Hill Nation Summit in Washington that he would leave the Democratic Party if it officially becomes an "anti-Israel party." While he stated he has no current plans to depart, Fetterman characterized a formal party platform that eliminates aid to Israel as a moral red line. These remarks followed a House of Representatives vote where 103 Democrats supported an amendment by Representative Thomas Massie to cut $3.3 billion in annual military aid to Israel for the fiscal 2027 appropriations bill. Although the amendment failed 314–104, Fetterman called the Democratic support for the measure disappointing.

Fetterman expressed concern over a growing hostility toward pro-Israel lawmakers, citing the success of progressive candidates in primaries and the influence of what he termed a "pro-Hamas wing" within the party. He specifically criticized House Democratic Whip Katherine Clark for supporting the aid cut. Beyond Israel, Fetterman has increasingly broken with his caucus on issues including the Iran war and funding for the Department of Homeland Security, and he criticized the resurgence of the "defund the police" movement.

The senator confirmed that Republicans have approached him about switching parties. He also recently formed a rare bipartisan joint fundraising committee with Republican Senator David McCormick, supported by billionaire Harlan Crow. Despite these ties, a Quinnipiac poll shows 69 percent of Democrats disapprove of Fetterman's performance, which may impact his 2028 primary prospects.
