Bank of Japan May Signal Inflation Target Achievement

The Bank of Japan may announce that underlying inflation has reached its 2 percent target, paving the way for an interest rate hike in December.

The Bank of Japan may signal this month that underlying inflation has roughly reached its 2 percent target. This symbolic announcement is expected in a quarterly report following the policy meeting scheduled for October 29-30. Such a move would reinforce market expectations for an interest rate hike in December and indicate a readiness for further increases in short intervals.

Recent Tokyo consumer inflation and tankan business survey data support the conviction that the target has been met. Factors contributing to this durable move include steady wage gains, rising wholesale and consumer inflation, and a renewed increase in crude oil prices. However, the bank remains cautious about a back-to-back hike in October because corporate inflation has moved sideways.

Governor Kazuo Ueda previously indicated that the bank has entered a phase focused on preventing inflation from overshooting its target. The upcoming announcement would serve as a formal justification for the bank's shift toward a more aggressive monetary tightening cycle.
