Xbox Outage Blocks Game Access Due to Licensing Service Failure
Microsoft restored global Xbox services after a widespread outage blocked users from signing in and launching games due to a failure in an internal licensing service.
A global service outage disrupted Microsoft Xbox services starting late July 26, 2026, preventing thousands of users from signing in, accessing the store, and launching games. The disruption affected all console generations from the Xbox 360 to the Xbox Series X|S and blocked access to digital, disc-based, and backward-compatible titles. Many users encountered error code 0x87e107df, which occurs when the system cannot verify digital game licenses.
Xbox Chief Technology Officer Scott Van Vliet attributed the crash to the failure of an internal licensing service shared across multiple products. This failure disrupted entitlement checks and impacted several publishing and store partners. Services were mitigated by the evening of July 27 and fully restored by 2:30 p.m. PT on July 28, although recovery happened unevenly across different regions.
Van Vliet characterized the situation as unacceptable and announced a full post-incident review to harden system dependencies and eliminate single points of failure. The outage follows a brief service disruption on July 23 and a similar recent outage on the PlayStation Network. The event occurs amid recent layoffs within the gaming division of Microsoft.
