Apple Launches Subscription Retention Tools for App Developers

Apple introduced a new feature and API allowing developers to present personalized offers to users attempting to cancel auto-renewable subscriptions.

Apple introduced a subscription retention feature for developers on November 4, 2026, to reduce the cancellation rate of auto-renewable subscriptions. The tool enables developers to present personalized retention messages, images, or special offers to users during the cancellation process before it is finalized.

Developers can manage subscriber eligibility and the timing of these messages through App Store Connect, with a maximum limit of 10 retention messages per application. To provide deeper customization, Apple is offering a Retention Messaging API by request, which allows developers to trigger specific messages based on a subscriber's account details.

This update differs from the Win-Back Offers launched in 2024 by focusing on current subscribers attempting to leave the service rather than targeting former subscribers for return.
