CF Industries Breaks Ground on Louisiana Blue Ammonia Plant

CF Industries broke ground on the Blue Point One complex, a low-carbon blue ammonia plant located outside Donaldsonville, Louisiana. The facility is designed to reduce U.S. reliance on imported fertilizers, which currently make up nearly half of the domestic supply. Once operational by the end of 2029, the plant is expected to produce chemicals sufficient to cover 6.7 million acres of cornfields, yielding 1.2 billion bushels annually.

The project is expected to create 3,900 construction jobs and 103 permanent positions with an average annual salary of $110,000. To mitigate environmental impacts at the Riverplex Megapark industrial site, the company stated that 95% of the plant's carbon dioxide waste will be captured and buried underground through a local sequestration partnership.

Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins described the current import reliance as a daily threat to the security of the supply chain. CEO Chris Bohner noted the plant will grow access to reliable domestic nitrogen supply for American farmers. Mayor Leroy Sullivan urged local residents to seek trade certification to ensure the community is prepared for the high-paying jobs.
