Lawmakers Demand ICE Disclose Pregnancy Loss Data

Democratic lawmakers are demanding that Immigration and Customs Enforcement disclose the number of miscarriages and stillbirths among detained immigrants following reports of missing medical data.

Democratic lawmakers in the United States are demanding that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) disclose the number of miscarriages, stillbirths, and pregnancy-related hospitalizations among immigrants in its custody. The request follows a Guardian investigation revealing that the Trump administration detained a record number of pregnant women and teens while losing track of pregnancy outcomes after October 3, 2025.

Internal ICE documents suggest the data loss resulted from a change in medical billing providers. A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security initially contradicted this claim before confirming a gap in data that lasted through June 2026. Despite this, the Department of Homeland Security maintains that claims of subprime care for pregnant detainees are false.

Representatives Brittany Pettersen, Joyce Beatty, and Robin Kelly, along with 64 cosigners, sent a formal letter to ICE Acting Director David Venturella. The lawmakers questioned the agency's adherence to a 2021 directive to avoid detaining pregnant immigrants and demanded a response by November 6 regarding when leadership became aware of the tracking deficiencies. Medical experts have warned that such lapses in care can lead to life-threatening emergencies.
