Goldman Sachs Reports Investor Skepticism Over Chinese Global Expansion

Goldman Sachs reports that equity investors remain skeptical of Chinese companies' rapid overseas expansion, demanding evidence of profitable growth over aggressive scaling.

Equity investors are showing skepticism toward the rapid international expansion of Chinese companies, according to a report from Goldman Sachs. While sluggish domestic consumer demand has pushed firms in sectors like electric vehicles and industrial robotics to seek growth abroad, investors are demanding evidence of profitable expansion rather than aggressive, low-margin scaling.

Chinese firms are accelerating their entry into new markets, exemplified by automaker Geely announcing plans to enter Canada in 2027. Goldman Sachs predicts that the overseas market share for Chinese companies will increase from approximately 18% to 31% by 2035 across various sectors, including express delivery and industrial robots.

Despite the potential for higher profit margins outside of China, investors fear a repeat of involution—the race-to-the-bottom competition characteristic of the Chinese domestic market. These concerns, combined with geopolitical risks and market access restrictions, mean that much of the potential for global expansion remains unpriced in current stock valuations.
