Incheon International Airport Becomes World's Busiest International Hub

Incheon International Airport in South Korea became the world's busiest airport for international passengers during the first half of 2026. According to preliminary figures from the Airports Council International, the hub handled 38.39 million travelers, marking the first time it has topped the international rankings since opening in 2001.

Incheon International Airport Corporation attributed the surge to increased visitors from China and Japan, as well as a shift in transfer traffic. Conflict between the United States and Iran diverted travelers away from Middle Eastern hubs, benefiting Incheon. The airport surpassed London Heathrow, which recorded 37.79 million passengers, and Singapore Changi, which recorded 34.53 million. While Heathrow saw its busiest first half on record, its capacity to the Middle East dropped 16.5% due to the regional war.

The growth follows a four-phase expansion completed in late 2024 that raised the airport's annual capacity to 106 million passengers. Acting president Kim Beom-ho credited the achievement to government support, public encouragement, and the efforts of airport staff.
