Supreme Court of India Urges Restraint Amid Protest Pleas

The Supreme Court of India agreed on August 5, 2026, to hear petitions seeking accountability for organizers of the July 20 'Sansad Chalo' march, which allegedly incited violence and stone-pelting in New Delhi. The pleas, including one filed by retired Air Force officer Maneesh Kumar Solanki, argue that the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) used provocative statements to lead protesters toward Parliament without permission.

Chief Justice Surya Kant, leading the bench, cautioned that aggressive state responses could socially aggravate the situation and precipitate further violence. He emphasized that law enforcement agencies must prioritize restraint, counseling, and listening to understand why young protesters are agitating. The Court noted that while organizers should be held accountable, the state must avoid violent responses that would only worsen the unrest.

The protests originally began in June over NEET-UG 2026 examination paper leaks and irregularities, leading to demands for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, who stepped down on July 25. The CJP has further demanded the withdrawal of criminal cases against students in Bihar and Assam, claiming the central government provided such assurances during late-night talks. The Court has issued a notice on the plea and tagged it with other pending petitions regarding protest violence, stating it will seek the view of the Central Government.
