Andy Beshear Dismisses Deadline to Replace Mitch McConnell

Governor Andy Beshear announced on Monday that an August 3 deadline to call a special election to replace Senator Mitch McConnell has no legal impact on his available options regarding the Senate vacancy. Beshear has repeatedly called for McConnell to resign or justify a 50-day absence from Congress.

Beshear suggested that the Republican Party's lack of transparency and the subsequent loss of a critical vote on issues such as the SAVE Act, conflicts with Iran, and Supreme Court appointments serves as a punishment for the party. He noted that Republicans are focused on his absence from a political event to watch his son play baseball while ignoring McConnell's prolonged disappearance.

The governor's ability to force a replacement remains constrained by House Bill 622 and Section 152 of the Kentucky state Constitution, which limit the governor's power to appoint interim replacements for U.S. Senate seats.
