China Deploys Naval and Air Assets Around Taiwan
The Ministry of National Defence of the Republic of China detected continuous Chinese military incursions involving naval vessels and aircraft from August 20 to August 23.
The Ministry of National Defence of the Republic of China detected a sustained increase in Chinese military activity around Taiwan between August 20 and August 23, 2026. The incursions involved a rotating combination of People's Liberation Army Navy vessels, official ships, and aircraft sorties.
Activity began on August 20 with seven navy ships and six official ships operating in the area. By August 22, the presence expanded to include eight navy vessels, seven official ships, and three aircraft sorties that crossed the median line into the northern and southwestern portions of Taiwan's Air Defense Identification Zone. On August 23, the ministry reported seven navy vessels and seven official ships, though no aircraft were detected that day.
The Republic of China Armed Forces responded to these movements by deploying navy ships, coastal missile systems, and Combat Air Patrol aircraft to monitor the situation. These operations occur as the Government of China continues to assert that Taiwan is an inseparable part of its territory, while Taiwan maintains its own independent government and military.
