Barisan Nasional Secures Two-Thirds Majority in Johor State Election
Barisan Nasional won more than 40 of 56 seats in the July 11 Johor state election, securing a two-thirds majority under Menteri Besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi.
The Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition won more than 40 of the 56 seats in the 16th Johor State Election on July 11, 2026, surpassing the two-thirds majority threshold. Unofficial results indicate a stronger performance than the 2022 polls, where the coalition won 40 seats. BN Chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi described the result as a strong mandate that could influence upcoming elections in Negri Sembilan and Melaka.
The election featured a direct confrontation between BN and Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's Pakatan Harapan (PH) after UMNO unilaterally broke their federal electoral pact. Leading up to the vote, the Ilham Centre projected a BN victory based on Menteri Besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi's 79% popularity rating and the coalition's strong administrative record. While PH hoped to capture seats through high Chinese voter turnout in urban areas, BN's dominance remained steady.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim criticized the timing of the polls, arguing that the campaign derailed efforts to stabilize an economy affected by supply chain disruptions and conflict in Iran. Despite the electoral clash, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi affirmed that BN will continue collaborating with the federal unity government. Following the victory, Onn Hafiz Ghazi urged elected members to set aside political differences and serve all citizens regardless of race.
