Elections Alberta Bars Third-Party Scrutineers From Referendum
Elections Alberta restricted referendum scrutineer roles to official political parties, prompting accusations of corruption from separatist supporters.
Elections Alberta is excluding third-party advertisers from serving as scrutineers for the October 19 referendum, limiting those roles to representatives from the United Conservative Party and the New Democratic Party. The agency cited space restrictions at voting locations and the high volume of election workers needed to manage a 10-question ballot as the reasons for the restriction.
Ezra Levant, publisher of Rebel News and a supporter of the Alberta separatist movement, accused the agency of corruption and favoring the campaign to remain in Canada. He claimed the decision puts the integrity of the referendum in question.
Political science experts stated that while the decision reveals a system designed for candidate-based elections rather than issue-based referendums, there is no evidence of a deliberate conspiracy to exclude separatist groups.
