Taiwan Foreign Minister Warns EU Over China Supply Chain Reliance
Lin Chia-lung warned the European Union that excessive dependence on Chinese suppliers threatens European sovereignty and freedom during the Warsaw Security Forum.
Taiwanese Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung warned the European Union that excessive reliance on Chinese suppliers threatens the bloc's freedom and sovereignty. Speaking at the Warsaw Security Forum in Poland, Lin argued that China's authoritarian ideology is fundamentally incompatible with European democracy, stating that control over supply chains could lead Europe to surrender its liberty.
These warnings coincide with an upcoming summit in Brussels, where EU leaders will discuss trade relations with Beijing. The European Union aims to reduce its trade deficit and decrease dependence on Chinese suppliers within sensitive industries. Lin proposed closer economic cooperation between Taiwan and Europe, citing shared values of democracy, freedom, human rights, and the rule of law.
Relations between the EU and China remain strained due to significant trade imbalances and Beijing's perceived support for Russia following the 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
