Romania Proposes Joint NATO Command for Black Sea States
Romania's National Defence Minister Radu Miruta proposed a joint NATO military command for Black Sea littoral states to address rising regional security risks.
National Defence Minister Radu Miruta proposed the establishment of a joint NATO military command for Black Sea littoral states during a telephone conversation with his Bulgarian counterpart. Miruta advocated for a joint letter to NATO leadership supporting a command structure featuring rotating leadership and locations among the littoral states.
Romania offered to host and lead the command starting in 2028, suggesting the structure operate on the coast of Turkey in the interim. The proposal follows a series of security incidents involving drones, naval mines, and sunken vessels in the region.
Miruta stated that Russian attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure have created collateral security risks. He argued that maritime and airspace incidents can no longer be treated as isolated national problems, asserting that the region requires action rather than waiting.
