Democratic Congress Party Wins Ol Kalou By-Election

The Democratic Congress Party won its first by-election in ten contests in Ol Kalou, triggering celebrations and accusations of state interference.

The Democratic Congress Party (DCP) secured a parliamentary by-election victory in Ol Kalou, Kenya, with candidate Douglas Kamau Waweru receiving 35,440 votes to defeat United Democratic Alliance candidate Samuel Muchina. This win marks the party's first victory in ten by-election contests, prompting leaders in the Rift Valley to view the result as an early warning for the 2027 General Election.

Rigathi Gachagua, former Deputy President and DCP leader, characterized the win as a turning point that proves money cannot determine elections. Speaking at a thanksgiving luncheon, Gachagua alleged that President William Ruto's government deployed billions in projects and high-ranking officials to influence the outcome. He further claimed that security officers attempted to suppress voters toward the end of the polling day.

The victory was not without controversy. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations launched a probe into allegations of violence and voter intimidation during the poll. Some critics dismissed the result as insignificant, noting that the party has only won one of its last ten by-election attempts.
