Cyprus to Implement EU Biofuel Mandates by 2028

The Government of Cyprus is preparing to implement European Union biofuel blending requirements by 2028 to lower greenhouse gas emissions. Officials informed parliament that the country aims to reduce transport fuel emissions intensity by 14.5 percent, a target necessitated by a lack of sufficient domestic biofuel production.

The transition is expected to increase diesel prices by approximately 7 cents per litre and petrol by 2.5 cents. To offset these costs, the state and EU funds have allocated 174 million euros for compensatory measures targeting vulnerable groups, scheduled to begin in 2027.

Legislators have responded with criticism and alternative proposals. House energy committee chair Nikos Georgiou described the government's assurances as vague and demanded a detailed plan and timetable for consumer support. Meanwhile, Member of Parliament Andreas Pasiourtides proposed abolishing double taxation on fuel to save motorists 7 to 8 cents per litre. Additionally, the Scientific and Technical Chamber criticized the state and banks for failing to provide adequate support for private biofuel production.
