Amazon Invests $50 Billion in OpenAI for Bedrock Integration

Amazon Web Services integrates OpenAI frontier models and the Codex coding agent into Amazon Bedrock following a $50 billion investment in the AI research organization.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) and OpenAI have expanded their partnership to integrate OpenAI's frontier AI models and the Codex coding agent into the Amazon Bedrock platform. This collaboration follows the end of OpenAI's exclusive cloud arrangement with Microsoft, allowing enterprises to deploy OpenAI's capabilities using AWS security controls and apply usage toward existing cloud spending commitments.

The agreement is underpinned by a $50 billion investment from Amazon into OpenAI and a reciprocal commitment from OpenAI to spend $100 billion on AWS over eight years. Additionally, OpenAI will utilize two gigawatts of compute powered by Amazon's Trainium AI chips to increase its computing capacity.

Parallel to this integration, AWS launched Amazon Quick, a proactive desktop AI assistant that utilizes a long-term knowledge graph to surface information from local files and third-party tools like Salesforce and Microsoft 365. Organizations including BMW, AstraZeneca, and 3M have begun adopting the tool, which is available across multiple subscription tiers.

These developments coincide with AWS reporting more than $15 billion in annualized revenue from AI services in the first quarter. The integration of OpenAI models on Bedrock allows AWS to reduce its reliance on Anthropic while meeting long-standing customer demands for broader model access within the AWS environment.
