Iran Calls for Gas Cuts Amid Winter Shortages
Mohammad Ghalibaf urged Iranians to reduce natural gas consumption by 10 percent to prevent winter shortages caused by war-damaged refineries.
Parliament Speaker Mohammad Ghalibaf called for a nationwide campaign to reduce natural gas consumption by at least 10 percent to mitigate anticipated winter shortages. Government officials, including First Vice-President Mohammad Aref, estimate daily gas shortfalls between 100 million and 250 million cubic metres during the cold season.
These shortages stem from damage to natural gas refineries during a conflict with the United States and Israel that began in February. To incentivize the public to save energy, the Iranian government will provide direct bank payments to citizens who reduce their gas usage.
While an April ceasefire ended the most intense bombardment, geopolitical tensions remain high. Iran claims control over the Strait of Hormuz, while the United States has implemented a counter-blockade on Iranian ports and an economic asphyxiation campaign designed to strangle the Iranian economy.
