Mitch McConnell Misses Fancy Farm Picnic During Injury Recovery

Senate Republican Leader Emeritus Mitch McConnell announced Monday that he will miss the annual Fancy Farm Picnic in western Kentucky this Saturday. The 84-year-old senator is currently recovering in a rehabilitation facility following a June 14 fall at his home that left him briefly unconscious and led to a case of pneumonia.

The Office of the Attending Physician stated that McConnell has not yet been medically cleared to leave rehabilitation or return to his professional duties in the Senate. Medical officials noted that a childhood bout with polio remains a significant factor in his mobility. To rebuild strength and reduce the risk of future falls, McConnell is undergoing a strenuous course of physical therapy consisting of multiple sessions per day.

McConnell has missed 38 Senate votes since his hospitalization and has not spoken publicly for 44 days. To address health speculation, his office released a photograph of the senator in bed with his wife, Elaine Chao. Governor Andy Beshear has previously called for increased transparency regarding the senator's condition. In a written statement, McConnell expressed his desire to return to his full work schedule in Washington, D.C. and Kentucky soon.
