Five Republicans File for South Carolina Special Senate Seat

The filing period for a special Republican primary to fill the U.S. Senate seat vacated by the death of Senator Lindsey Graham opened on July 21 in Columbia, South Carolina. Five candidates filed on the first day, including attorney Duke Buckner, engineer Samuel Shepherd, and businessman Mark Lynch. Each candidate paid a filing fee of $10,440 to the South Carolina State Election Commission.

Republican voters will cast ballots in the special primary on August 11, with early voting from August 5-7. A runoff is scheduled for August 25 if no candidate secures a majority. The winner will face Democratic candidate Dr. Annie Andrews in the general election on November 3 to serve the remainder of the term.

Conway Belangia, Executive Director of the State Election Commission, stated that the unplanned election will cost over $2 million to administer. Candidates highlighted varying priorities during their filings, with Buckner focusing on the federal deficit and government size, while Shepherd emphasized his professional background as an inventor and problem-solver.
