Meta Tests AI Agent Muse Outbound Calling Feature

Meta Platforms, Inc. is testing a new outbound calling feature for its AI agent, Muse, designed to handle tasks such as restaurant reservations. While the company presents the tool as an AI capability, internal communications reveal the use of a human agent layer where trained contractors make the calls on behalf of users to ensure the tasks are completed.

Internal employees have raised concerns regarding data privacy and the risk of negative public perception if the product launches without clear disclosures. Some testers reported they were only notified that a human had performed the call after the task was finished.

Company executives, including Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang and Principal Engineer Ryan Fox, announced the expansion of the Muse phone beta to include outbound calls to businesses in the United States. Meta stated the feature is currently in a confidential dogfooding phase to allow the company to implement safety and privacy protections before a public release.
