Warren Buffett Initiated Berkshire Hathaway's Alphabet Inc. Investment
Warren Buffett revealed he personally initiated Berkshire Hathaway's investment in Alphabet Inc. in 2025 before CEO Greg Abel expanded the position in 2026.
Warren Buffett, Executive Chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, disclosed in a CNBC interview that he personally initiated the company's investment position in Alphabet Inc. in 2025. The revelation clarifies previous assumptions that the original move was led by other managers or by CEO Greg Abel.
Abel significantly expanded the holding in early 2026, adding more than $20 billion to the position through a first-quarter purchase and a private placement. Alphabet has since become the fourth-largest position in the Berkshire Hathaway equity portfolio.
Buffett cited Alphabet's ability to earn high returns on capital as a primary driver for the investment, though he expressed regret for not purchasing the stock sooner. He also noted concerns regarding the substantial capital expenditures AI competitors are currently allocating toward data center infrastructure.
