Mobicom Convoy Sparks Massive Fire in Mongolian Protected Area
Mobicom sparked a wildfire that destroyed 80 percent of Mongolia's Numrug Strictly Protected Area, prompting demands for accountability from the Mongolian government.
A vehicle convoy operated by Mobicom, a subsidiary of the Japanese telecom operator KDDI, sparked a massive wildfire in Mongolia's Numrug Strictly Protected Area on October 8, 2026. The blaze burned for eight days, destroying approximately 530,000 hectares—roughly 80 percent of the reserve—before being extinguished on October 16. The fire forced rare wildlife to flee into China, where 2,000 personnel were deployed to contain the flames.
KDDI acknowledged on October 20 that the fire was linked to Mobicom's activities and confirmed that executive Yasuhiro Ochi was present. While Mobicom described the event as an operational accident during a telecom infrastructure survey, Mongolian officials and media allege the convoy may have entered the restricted zone for illegal hunting and fishing.
Mongolian Prime Minister Nyam-Osor Uchral and Deputy Prime Minister Nyamtaishiryn Nomtoibayar have demanded full accountability and compensation, dismissing Mobicom's apology as insufficient. A government working group is currently assessing long-term ecological damage to soil, water, and wildlife. Meanwhile, the Japanese government faced public criticism for a delayed response; Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara only addressed the matter on October 27, stating that Japan will cooperate with Mongolia on restoration efforts.
