Nicholasville Police Propose New E-Bike and Scooter Regulations

The Nicholasville Police Department has drafted a new ordinance to regulate the use of electric bikes and scooters after a rise in reports of reckless riding. Police Chief Michael Fleming stated the department receives complaints almost daily about riders ignoring traffic laws and operating vehicles against the flow of traffic.

The proposed regulations would require all riders to follow traffic laws and use safety gear. Adults must supervise riders under 12 years old. The ordinance would ban e-bikes and scooters from sidewalks and public parks, though children under 12 would remain permitted on residential sidewalks if supervised.

To mitigate the impact of the ban, Director of Parks and Recreation Annessa Snowden announced that city leaders are searching for property to create a designated e-bike riding area. City officials are scheduled to vote on the ordinance next week.
