INEC Pledges Neutrality and Tech-Driven Integrity for 2027 Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) issued a series of assurances regarding the integrity and impartiality of Nigeria's upcoming 2027 general elections across multiple forums in Abuja and Ilorin. During a democracy roundtable in Abuja, INEC Deputy Director of Voter Education and Planning Magdalene Aku stated the commission is committed to protecting the electorate's will using the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and the INEC Result Viewing (IReV) portal. Aku warned citizens against selling their ballots and emphasized inclusivity for vulnerable groups.

In a subsequent seminar focused on the role of the Armed Forces, INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan declared that the commission has no preferred candidate and remains committed solely to the Constitution. Amupitan urged military personnel to maintain absolute professionalism and political neutrality. General Olufemi Oluyede, the Chief of Defence Staff, affirmed that the Armed Forces would support civil authorities while adhering to human rights principles.

Regional efforts continued in Kwara State, where INEC officials dismissed the effectiveness of hoarding Permanent Voter Cards due to technological advancements and urged political parties to prioritize issue-based campaigns over violence. Meanwhile, the Nigeria Union of Journalists FCT Council and the News Agency of Nigeria called for stronger partnerships to combat misinformation, with the union announcing plans to establish an Election Situation Room to monitor developments for the 2027 cycle.
