SEBI Projects ₹2 Trillion Potential in Indian IPO Fundraising
SEBI Chairman Poonam Pandey announced that India could raise ₹2 trillion through IPOs as the regulator works to simplify public market access.
The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) projects that India could potentially raise ₹2 trillion through initial public offerings. Chairman Poonam Pandey noted that of the ₹600 billion raised in the current period, approximately 55% consists of fresh capital for companies, signaling a trend toward capital formation rather than shareholder exits.
Pandey attributed this potential to the resilience of the Indian economy, which recorded a 7.8% real GDP growth in the first quarter of FY2026-27. The broader capital market has expanded significantly, with equity market capitalization reaching $5 trillion and corporate bonds growing to approximately ₹61 trillion.
To support this growth, SEBI is working to simplify access to public markets by reducing regulatory friction and calibrating disclosure requirements based on the size and nature of issuers. The regulator aims to deepen markets and strengthen safeguards to ensure they remain trusted by both domestic and global investors.
