Japan Raises $1.6 Billion Through Fifth Climate Transition Bond

The Government of Japan raised ¥250 billion via climate transition bonds to fund AI, robotics, and nuclear technology amid rising fossil fuel reliance.

The Government of Japan raised ¥250 billion ($1.6 billion) through the sale of its fifth climate transition bond of the year. The issuance saw a bid-to-cover ratio of 3.84 and forms part of a broader ¥150 trillion program extending through 2033 to fund emissions reduction projects.

Proceeds from this fiscal year's sales are primarily earmarked for semiconductors, artificial intelligence, robotics, and nuclear technologies, including fusion energy. Only 4% of the funds are allocated to renewable energy. The Bank of Japan has purchased a significant portion of the issued transition debt.

This funding strategy coincides with an increased national reliance on fossil fuels and the release of strategic reserves, driven by energy supply threats resulting from the war in Iran. The International Energy Agency reported that coal, oil, and gas accounted for more than 80% of Japan's energy supply last year, leading environmental think-tanks to criticize the government's energy trajectory.
