Multicultural Business Coalition Sues Mayor Mamdani Over City-Run Stores

The Multicultural Business Coalition filed two lawsuits in New York state court on August 24 against Zohran Mamdani, challenging his initiative to open five city-run grocery stores by 2029. The $70 million taxpayer-funded project aims to place one store in each borough to combat food insecurity, with planned sites including La Marqueta in East Harlem and the former Spofford Juvenile Detention center in the Bronx.

Plaintiffs argue the plan creates unfair competition by offering core goods at a 30% discount and utilizing rent subsidies from the New York City Economic Development Corporation. The coalition alleges the administration bypassed required land-use reviews and economic analyses, claiming the stores pose a threat to minority-owned businesses similar to the entry of a major retailer like Walmart.

Mayor Mamdani defended the initiative at a press conference, stating he is confident in its legality and its importance in delivering the stores to the people of the city. In response to the competition concerns, the New York City Economic Development Corporation indicated it is considering subsidies for local grocers to mitigate the impact on existing small businesses.
