Altria Stock Rallies 32 Percent Amid Tech Sector Shift
Altria Group outperformed the S&P 500 with a 32 percent stock rally driven by pricing power and a strategic shift toward smoke-free products.
Altria Group outperformed the S&P 500 this year, recording a 32 percent stock rally compared to the index's 9 percent gain. The company achieved this growth through pricing power, cost discipline, and share buybacks, which increased free cash flow to 9.1 billion dollars and grew adjusted earnings per share despite a period of falling revenue and declining cigarette shipments between 2020 and 2025.
To offset the decline in traditional cigarette sales, the company is diversifying its portfolio through the acquisitions of NJOY, UST, and Helix Innovations. Altria aims for its smoke-free revenue to reach at least 5 billion dollars by 2028.
The stock's recent momentum follows a broader market shift away from big tech companies. This trend was triggered by Federal Reserve rate hikes in September and Democratic victories in the November midterm elections. Specifically, investor sentiment shifted as officials like Texas governor-elect Gina Hinojosa expressed opposition to the unchecked construction of new data centers.
