NURTW Members Protest Against Osun State Chairman Over Killings

Members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers staged widespread protests across major motor parks in Osun State on July 20, 2026. Demonstrators marched through Osogbo and passed a vote of no confidence in factional state chairman Nurudeen Alowonle, whom they accuse of spearheading violent attacks that killed a man in his 70s and a toddler, Adelodun Olamilekan Lateef.

Union officials and protesters alleged that Alowonle and his associate Sikiru Oyeniyi possess illegal arms and have disrupted the transportation sector, leading to business closures and retaliatory violence. In response to the unrest, Ademola Adeleke, Governor of Osun State, directed security operatives to arrest any individuals found disrupting the state's peace.

The crisis has drawn further complications from the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria, which accused the state government of partisan interference and demanded the removal of its own state chairman, Comrade Jelili Abioye. Meanwhile, union leadership and advocates continue to call for the Inspector-General of Police to intervene to restore order to the sector.
