RBI Deputy Governor Forecasts India Growth Near 7 Percent
Poonam Gupta predicts India's economic growth may reach nearly 7 percent, exceeding the Reserve Bank of India's official forecast of 6.7 percent.
Reserve Bank of India Deputy Governor Poonam Gupta stated that India's economic growth for the financial year ending in March may reach nearly 7 percent. Speaking at the Madras School of Economics, Gupta noted that this figure would exceed the central bank's official forecast of 6.7 percent, citing expectations of a robust April-June quarter.
This growth trajectory persists despite economic headwinds, including a deficient monsoon and elevated energy costs. Gupta's optimistic outlook coincides with a hawkish policy stance, as recent meeting minutes suggest the possibility of a rate hike later this year. Economists further predict a positive balance of payments supported by up to $80 billion in foreign inflows.
The economic resilience follows a period of concern regarding the impact of the Iran war, which did not materialize as feared. In response to the stability, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reiterated his goal of transforming India into a developed nation by 2047.
