Iranian Hackers Shut Down UK Power Generator
Hackers linked to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps shut down a small-scale UK power generator for four days in a first-of-its-kind attack on British energy infrastructure.
Hackers linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps successfully shut down a small-scale UK power generator for four days last month. This event marks the first time an overseas hacking group has brought a British energy facility to a complete standstill. The breach occurred alongside a series of Iranian-linked cyberattacks on water infrastructure in the United States, which caused pressure loss and flooding across several states.
The Government of the United Kingdom stated the incident posed no risk to the wider energy grid, maintaining that the UK has a highly resilient energy system. Following the attack, the National Cyber Security Centre received the report, and the government briefed power company executives to provide security guidance to businesses.
This incident follows warnings from British and American intelligence regarding threats to critical infrastructure from Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea. A UK Cabinet Office risk assessment previously estimated a 5% to 25% chance of a successful cyberattack on domestic infrastructure. Richard Horne, Chief Executive of the National Cyber Security Centre, noted that the majority of nationally significant incidents his teams handle now originate directly or indirectly from nation states.
