UK to Deploy Observers for Ekiti and Osun Elections

The United Kingdom will send observer delegations to monitor governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun States to protect its economic and security interests in Nigeria.

The Government of the United Kingdom will deploy observer delegations to monitor upcoming off-cycle governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun States. British High Commissioner Richard Montgomery announced the move on June 4, 2026, during a visit to the All Progressives Congress headquarters in Abuja, characterizing the polls as the final off-season elections before the 2027 general elections.

Montgomery stated that the UK is monitoring the democratic process due to significant economic, financial, and security investments in the country. In response, All Progressives Congress National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda pledged that the ruling party would prioritize issue-based campaigns and avoid inflammatory rhetoric to maintain stability.

The Independent National Electoral Commission has scheduled the Ekiti governorship election for June 20, 2026, and the Osun governorship election for August 8, 2026.
