Oxfordshire Launches Car-Free School Streets Traffic Scheme

The Government of Oxfordshire launched a school streets traffic scheme on September 3, 2026, following five years of development. The initiative establishes car-free environments during school drop-off and pick-up times to increase safety for children walking, cycling, or scooting to school.

The scheme operates across three specific areas. In Banbury, Harrier's View is closed near Harriers Banbury Academy. In Carterton, restrictions affect roads near Edith Moorhouse Primary School and St Joseph's Catholic Primary School. In Didcot, several roads are closed near Willowcroft Community Primary School and St Birinus Boys School.

Unauthorized drivers entering these restricted zones during timed closures face fines. The local authority provides exemptions for blue badge holders and emergency vehicles, and other residents may register for exemptions.
