Valve Rejects Game Exclusives for New Steam Machine Hardware
Valve Corporation will not develop exclusive games for the Steam Machine, opting instead to treat the entire PC catalog as its launch exclusive.
Valve Corporation announced it will not release exclusive games to drive sales of its newly launched Steam Machine. Engineer Pierre-Loup Griffais stated that the company views the entire PC game catalog as its "launch exclusive," arguing that restricting where people can play games is not a viable model for the organization.
This strategy aims to maintain an open ecosystem and ensure the market remains viable for other hardware manufacturers to offer devices with different features or performance levels. The decision also addresses speculation that future titles, such as Half-Life 3, would be used as exclusives to compete with consoles like PlayStation and Xbox; however, no official announcement regarding Half-Life 3 has been made.
The Steam Machine is currently available via a reservation system, with the 512 GB model priced at $1,049. While Valve considers the launch a success, engineer Yazan Aldehayyat warned that a global memory capacity crisis, exacerbated by the AI boom, is limiting production and causing retail supply lags.
