Alibaba and Moonshot Launch Tiered AI Revenue Models
Alibaba and Moonshot are offering frontier AI models for free to small users while charging fees to companies exceeding specific revenue thresholds.
Chinese AI laboratories Alibaba Group and Moonshot have introduced a strategic revenue model for their frontier AI models, Qwen3.8-Max and Kimi K3. The approach allows students, startups, and individual developers to download and customize the models for free, but mandates fees for companies that reach specific revenue milestones from model-as-a-service businesses.
Alibaba Group requires payment from companies earning over $50 million over 12 consecutive months, while Moonshot has set its threshold at $20 million. To support this rollout, Moonshot is reportedly establishing revenue-share agreements with major cloud providers, including Google, Microsoft, and Amazon.
This pricing strategy is designed to undercut United States competitors such as OpenAI and Anthropic by providing high-capability models at a lower cost. However, the companies face potential risks from United States regulatory crackdowns or the possibility that cloud providers may refuse to pay the required fees.
