Business Insider Experiment Finds AI Cannot Replace Human Managers
A Business Insider reporter tested an AI clone of their manager and found it lacked the judgment and accountability required for leadership.
Business Insider conducted a four-month experiment to determine if an AI clone could replace a direct manager. Editor Ryan Kailath used OpenAI's ChatGPT and Codex to create RyanBot, an AI version of himself built from detailed manuals on his communication style, professional motivations, and feedback methods.
RyanBot demonstrated proficiency in technical and rule-based tasks, such as analyzing data reports, checking code, and providing grammar edits. However, the AI failed to replicate the essential functions of human leadership. The reporter noted that the bot was overly sycophantic and unable to push back on weak ideas.
The experiment concluded that the AI lacked an understanding of institutional context and office politics. While the tools could speed up specific workflows, they could not replace the trust, taste, and accountability provided by a human leader.
