Algoma Steel Resumes Production After Power Outage

Algoma Steel Group Inc. restarted its electric arc furnace production using interim power arrangements following a turbine failure at its Lake Superior Power facility.

Algoma Steel Group Inc. resumed electric arc furnace production in Sault Ste. Marie after an unplanned power outage halted operations last month. The shutdown occurred when a turbine unit at the company's Lake Superior Power generating facility detected an abnormal condition and automatically went offline.

To restart production while the turbine remains unavailable, the company coordinated with the Independent Electricity System Operator to implement interim operating arrangements. These temporary measures allow the steel producer to maintain output while it addresses the technical failure.

Algoma Steel is currently working with GE to restore full generating capacity. The company is evaluating whether to repair the damaged turbine or secure a complete replacement to return the facility to full operational status.
