Central Banks Scrutinize Global Banks After Jane Street Loss

The US Federal Reserve and Bank of England are investigating bank exposure to trading firms following a $15 billion loss at Jane Street.

The US Federal Reserve and the Bank of England are increasing scrutiny of global banks' exposure to large trading firms after Jane Street Capital incurred a $15 billion loss. The financial instability stemmed from turmoil at Situational Awareness, an AI-focused hedge fund managed by former OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner. Following a sharp sell-off in AI and chip stocks, Situational Awareness was forced to sell the majority of its public equities portfolio to Citadel Securities.

Central banks are now requesting detailed data on the risk appetite of trading firms, the evolution of bank exposure throughout the trading day, and the overall effectiveness of existing risk controls.

Simultaneously, the United States Securities and Exchange Commission has subpoenaed several major Wall Street institutions, including Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, Citigroup, and Bank of America. The regulatory agency is examining the specific trades that triggered margin calls and the extent of leverage used by Situational Awareness.
