Welsh Government Increases Idling Fines to Combat Air Pollution

The Government of Wales increased penalties for drivers who leave their engines running while parked, effective September 30. Local councils can now impose fines between £75 and £150, replacing a previous fixed penalty of £20. Officials stated the earlier fine was too low to deter idling or make enforcement financially viable for local authorities.

Llyr Gruffydd, the Cabinet Minister for Rural Resilience and Sustainability, indicated that councils may target enforcement near healthcare centers and schools to protect vulnerable groups. Revenue from these fines, after administration costs, will fund pollution reduction measures and air quality improvements.

The policy change was highlighted during a visit to Marshfield Primary School in Newport, where students have campaigned against idling to protect respiratory health. Isabel Oliver, the Chief Medical Officer for Wales, noted that reducing exposure to air pollution helps children remain well at school.
