Leeds Railway Station Receives £303 Million Modernization Funding

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander announced a £303 million transformation of Leeds railway station to reduce congestion and expand capacity by 2030.

Leeds railway station will undergo a £303 million transformation to ease congestion and improve accessibility, with completion expected by 2030. The project, confirmed in the Budget, includes an additional £200 million in funding to modernize the facility, which currently serves over 27 million passengers annually.

Heidi Alexander, the Transport Secretary, stated the investment supports the establishment of Great British Railways and paves the way for Northern Powerhouse Rail. The upgrade aligns with the £11 billion Transpennine Route Upgrade to accommodate a projected increase of nearly 12 million passengers by 2043.

Infrastructure improvements include three new entrances to support business growth in Princes Square, the Dark Arches, and the South Bank. The plan also features a new central overbridge, expanded concourse space, an extended Platform 14, and a nearly 40 per cent increase in ticket barriers. Mayor of West Yorkshire Tracy Brabin noted the investment will unlock the capacity needed for future growth and create a gateway that reflects the region's ambition.
