OpenAI Launches Images 2.6 with GIF Generation Capabilities
OpenAI integrated the Images 2.6 model into ChatGPT and Codex, enabling users to generate animated GIFs and images 50 percent faster than before.
OpenAI released the Images 2.6 model on November 5, 2026, integrating it into ChatGPT, Codex, and the company's API. The update increases image generation speed by 50 percent over previous versions and introduces the ability to create short, looping animated GIFs using text prompts, uploaded images, or rough sketches. Users can further refine these animations by adjusting speed and editing individual frames.
The company positioned the GIF tool for creating animated storyboards and exploring character movement, rather than as a full AI video generator, following the discontinuation of its Sora app. OpenAI reported that its platforms currently generate approximately 4 billion images per week.
For developers, the company introduced two specialized API models: GPT-Image-2.6 Flare, which prioritizes speed to deliver low-quality images in as little as six seconds, and GPT-Image-2.6 Sunburst, which focuses on high-quality output and visual consistency. Additional developer tools include SVG export support, image markup for targeted editing, and a complexity parameter to control the model's planning process. The update is rolling out globally across all subscription tiers, including free users, on web, desktop, and mobile platforms.
