Poll Shows Tight Race for New Zealand General Election
A new poll indicates a highly competitive 2026 New Zealand general election with the Labour and National parties locked in a close race.
A Post/Freshwater Strategy poll released October 19 shows a highly competitive 2026 New Zealand general election, with neither major party holding enough support to govern alone. The Labour Party leads slightly with 28.7% of the vote, while the National Party follows closely at 27.6%.
The Opportunity party currently polls at 5.4%, placing it just above the 5% parliamentary threshold and positioning it as a potential kingmaker in coalition negotiations. Other party standings include the Green Party at 14.3%, NZ First at 11.8%, ACT at 9%, and Te Pāti Māori at 2%.
These results emerge just before a final major debate between Labour leader Chris Hipkins and National leader Christopher Luxon. Analysts describe the current cycle as one of the most unpredictable of the mixed-member proportional era, noting a significant possibility of a parliamentary overhang on both the left and right.
