Israel Advances E1 Settlement Plan Near Jerusalem

The Israeli government advanced a plan to build 1,200 housing units in the West Bank, drawing condemnation from the UK, Egypt, and other nations.

The Cabinet of Israel has advanced a settlement plan to construct more than 1,200 housing units in the E1 area near Jerusalem in the occupied West Bank. The project seeks to create a continuous bloc of Jewish settlements from East Jerusalem to the West Bank, a move critics argue would divide the territory into north and south and make a contiguous Palestinian state impossible. The Israeli Housing Ministry has already invited construction bids, with a deadline set for one week before the October elections.

International reaction has been sharply critical. Leaders from the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Norway, Canada, and the Netherlands warned companies against participating in the project. UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband called the act unacceptable and destructive, while the Government of Egypt rejected the expansion as an attempt to entrench a policy of fait accompli. The Muslim Council of Elders also condemned the tender, characterizing the expansion as a flagrant violation of international law and UN resolutions.

Israeli officials defended the move. Foreign Minister Gideon Saar dismissed British criticism as absurd, while Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich stated that the Palestinian state is being erased from the table through these actions. Palestinian ambassador to the United Nations Riyad Mansour characterized the construction as dangerous and irresponsible, calling for the process to be stopped.
