Space Force Awards SpaceX $1.6 Billion for 18 Launches

The United States Space Force awarded SpaceX $1.6 billion across two task orders to execute 18 Falcon 9 rocket launches through 2027. These missions will deploy satellites for the Space Based Sensing and Targeting portfolio, specifically supporting the Space-Based Airborne Moving Target Indicator program designed to detect and target airborne threats.

All launches are scheduled to take place from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. These awards fall under the National Security Space Launch Phase 3 Lane 1 program, which recently increased its contract ceiling to $17 billion to accommodate a higher volume of planned launches. The contracts align with the Trump administration's $185 billion Golden Dome missile defense initiative.

SpaceX has secured at least $7 billion in Department of Defense contracts this year. The company maintains a lead over competitors United Launch Alliance and Blue Origin, both of which are currently addressing technical failures with their respective rocket systems. Space Force acquisition official Eric Zarybnisky described the procurement process as an unprecedented timeline.
