AST SpaceMobile Explores $6 Billion Spectrum Deal Amid Launch Delays

AST SpaceMobile is exploring a $6 billion spectrum license acquisition with SpaceX while facing lowered revenue estimates due to satellite shipment delays.

AST SpaceMobile is exploring a $6 billion acquisition of spectrum licenses from Grain Management LLC in partnership with Space Exploration Technologies Corp. to enhance its space-based wireless services. This strategic move comes as the company faces operational setbacks and financial pressure.

William Blair & Company recently lowered its 2027 revenue estimate for the company to $459 million, down from $752 million. The investment firm cited shipment delays and a slower launch cadence for BlueBird II satellites, predicting fewer than 20 satellites will be in orbit by the end of 2026, well below the company's original target of 45.

Despite these challenges, the company has achieved some technical milestones. AST SpaceMobile and Telus completed their first network integration test, with customer service expected to launch within a year. CEO Abel Antonio Avellan has confirmed the deployment and performance of BlueBird 11 and other satellites.

Financial markets have reacted poorly to the mixed progress. The company's stock has fallen 37% over the last six months, following second-quarter earnings that missed Wall Street forecasts for both revenue and adjusted earnings per share.
