k.d. lang Addresses Alberta Separatism Grievances in Ottawa

Musician k.d. lang expressed understanding for Alberta's economic grievances ahead of a provincial vote on separatism while urging national dialogue and mutual listening.

Musician k.d. lang spoke in Ottawa on October 1, 2026, regarding the political tensions in her home province of Alberta. Speaking before a tribute concert at the National Arts Centre, lang stated she understands the grievances of Albertans concerning "the inequity of the oil production and the money."

While acknowledging these economic frustrations, lang declined to take a definitive stance on Alberta separatism. She noted that her current residency in Portland, Oregon, means she does not "have a lot of leg to stand on" regarding the internal provincial debate. Instead, she urged Canadians to listen to one another and avoid dismissing those with opposing views.

These comments come as Alberta prepares for a vote later this month to determine whether the province will remain in Canada or initiate a second, binding referendum on leaving the country. The political divide is further highlighted by the involvement of other artists; while lang called for dialogue, performer Jann Arden recently supported the anti-separatist Forever Canadian campaign.
