Eurozone Inflation Hits 4.0% Amid Rising Energy Costs

Eurozone inflation rose to 4.0% in October, driven by energy price spikes and instability linked to the conflict with Iran.

Consumer prices in the Eurozone rose to 4.0% in October, the highest rate since September 2023 and the fourth consecutive monthly increase. Data from Eurostat shows that inflation accelerated from 3.8% in September, primarily due to energy prices climbing 21% over the previous year. This surge is attributed to dwindling natural gas stocks and instability stemming from the unresolved conflict with Iran.

While headline inflation has significantly exceeded the 2% target set by the European Central Bank, core inflation remained stable at 2.5%. Outgoing ECB President Christine Lagarde previously maintained steady interest rates, noting that underlying inflation was broadly stable and wage growth remained limited.

The recent climb in consumer prices has reinforced market expectations that the European Central Bank may hike its key interest rate in the future to combat the rising cost of living.
