National Audit Office Warns UK Food Supply Is Vulnerable

The National Audit Office warned that the United Kingdom is insufficiently prepared for severe shocks to its food supplies. In a recent report, the watchdog cited increasing risks from the climate crisis, disease, and cyber-attacks, noting that the UK's heavy reliance on overseas imports through four major ports creates significant vulnerability.

While the supply chain remained resilient during the Covid-19 pandemic and the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, the watchdog found that a 2023 preparedness exercise conducted by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs excluded most supply chain businesses. The report urged the department to strengthen emergency planning and increase collaboration with households, local governments, and industry.

The Cold Chain Federation accused the government of complacency regarding national food storage. The trade body called for the designation of transport hubs and cold stores as critical national infrastructure to ensure power maintenance during outages.
